There are a few application on my Mac I couldn’t live without. Apart from the pre-installed iLife suite (I am happy to let iTunes handle to organisation of my playlists), there are lots of interesting, productivity-enhancing and simply indispensable software products.

In the following, topically grouped entries I present a sketchy selection of my picks, there are some commercial products, the majority of these applications is mostly donation-ware or even freeware. Thus, this list is highly recommended for users who have recently switched from Windows or other operating systems and are not yet not familiar with the quantity and quality of free (or low-cost) Mac software. It is meant to be orientational, not encyclopedical and I added links wherever it may be helpful.

A personal account of the missing and highly desired improvements on the iPhone/iPod touch.

Copy/Paste: This is already one of the most frequently requested features, required to copy snippets from websites, mails, notes or or other text resources. Very useful, indeed. I tend to like the idea of pressing on the appropriate holding a little longer than for the magnifier glass to start the selection process, with a pop-up to choose the corresponding action (cut, copy, paste).

Notes synchronisation: This is a must-have-feature for the iPhone, until now you have to send the notes to your own e-mail address to be able to store them permanently or modify them on the desktop. I can’t believe that there is still no solution to this issue.

Noch eine gute Nachricht – aber vermutlich ausschließlich für US-Bürger – ist der bereits vermutete Filmverleih in iTunes nun endlich angelaufen. 2,99$ für ältere Titel, 3,99$ für neue Veröffentlichungen. Voraussetzungen: Innerhalb von 30 Tagen muss der ausgeliehene Film gestartet werden, danach hat man 24 Stunden Zeit, den Film zu Ende zu sehen. „Watch anywhere, PCs, Macs, iPods, iPhone...“ Start: Ab heute. International soll dieses Service im Laufe des Jahres gestartet werden. Es wäre schön, wenn diesmal die Rechteinhaber sich nicht querstellen würden und ein derartiger Dienst auch in Europa und dem Rest der Welt ermöglicht werden könnte.

Endlich! Wie Steve Jobs auf der Macworld 2008 verkündet hat, bekommt der iPod touch endgültig die lang-erwarteten Applikationen Mail, Aktien, Wetter, Notizen und Google Maps. Allerdings verlangt man von den bisherigen Käufern 20$ dafür, alle neu ausgelieferten iPods haben diese standardmäßig an Bord. Da bin ich einmal auf die protestierenden Erstkäufer gespannt (mich eingeschlossen)!
